Chiropractic Care for Pregnant Women
Here at Jenkins Family Chiropractic we are highly trained in prenatal chiropractic care. Spinal alignment is essential in helping expectant mothers enjoy a more comfortable and healthy pregnancy. The reason this is so vitally important is because during pregnancy, several physiologic and endocrine changes occur to prepare an optimal environment for the developing baby. During the 40 week process of pregnancy the following changes often cause Subluxations resulting a misaligned spine:
- Postural adaptations
- Pelvic changes
- Protruding abdomen and increased back curve
Maintaining proper alignment, pelvic balance and proper spinal integrity via chiropractic care during pregnancy is also beneficial when it comes time for delivery. When a mother’s pelvis is misaligned it can decrease the amount of space available for the developing baby. When there is not enough room for the developing baby it is referred to as intrauterine constraint. Intrauterine constraint and misaligned pelvis may also make it difficult for the baby to get into the best possible position for delivery. This affects the mother’s ability to have a natural, non-invasive birth. Breech and posterior positions can interfere with the natural ease of labor and lead to interventions such as cephalic version and c-sections.
Correcting the pelvic alignment at an early stage and maintaining a properly aligned, Subluxation free spine throughout pregnancy may prevent potential difficulties during the pregnancy such as intrauterine constraint and may reduce the chance of C-section (see Webster Technique). The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) highly recommends Chiropractic therapy be utilized in all 3 trimesters of pregnancy to maintain pelvic balance and optimize space within the womb for fetal development.
